About the Artist

Throughout my childhood, I had a strong interest in sketching, but growing up in a small, isolated community on the coast of Newfoundland, I had limited opportunities for formal artistic training. As I reached adulthood and moved to Ontario, I—like many—put creative pursuits on hold to focus on career and family. However, the unexpected pause brought on by the global pandemic gave me the space to reconnect with painting, marking a turning point in my artistic journey.

I started with watercolor and was encouraged by the positive response to my work, which motivated me to continue developing my skills. Looking for a more structured approach, I enrolled in Ian Roberts’ course, where I learned foundational techniques—beginning with drawing, progressing through monochromatic studies, and eventually introducing colour. The course emphasized concepts like depth, colour relationships, and edge control, all of which became essential tools in my practice.

As I gained confidence, I transitioned into oil painting, drawn to the medium’s versatility and texture. Although I began with landscapes, my subject matter has since expanded to include people, architecture, florals, and other themes.

To better understand the professional side of being an artist, I joined local art associations such as Artists of Stonebridge and the Manotick Art Association. Through participating in art shows, I’ve gained insight into both the creative and business aspects of selling artwork.

In recent years, I’ve shifted to acrylics, which are less toxic both to me and to the environment, and I find that I can achieve very similar effects to oil with the right choice of paints and application techniques. In each painting, I aim to guide the viewer’s eye through the composition, using framing, focal points, edging, and a progression of colour—starting with muted tones at the periphery that gradually intensify toward the central subject.

I’m inspired by artists like Jessica Brill, Jeremy Miranda, and Chris Long, and my style blends representational elements with a personal, interpretive approach.
