My plein air group session got cancelled today due to the poor air quality that has blanketed Ottawa for the past few days, so I decided to come up with my own plein air study. These are 3 trees across the road from my house. I decided to paint them as the sun was setting, but it got dark fast, so I was painting in almost total darkness. The end result was more painterly than my usual paintings, for sure.
Painting in darkness was a valuable experience for me because it forced me not to fuss over the minor details, simply because I couldn’t see them! I also like the darker bluey shades that appear when the sun goes down. I will be trying this again soon.
